Facebook is testing Instagram's reels feature in India. Business insider Reports. Reels is a video editing tool that allows users to create 15-second TikTok-style videos that can be shared on their Instagram stories, broadcast via DM, or published in a section of the Explore tab called "Top Reels" .
The news came just days after the Indian government banned TikTok along with 58 other apps based in China. Business insider reports that some Instagram users in India have already received Instagram's new feature in an update, and a Facebook spokesman confirmed that the company plans to release the feature on a larger scale.
"We plan to test an updated version of Reels in other countries," said a Facebook spokesman Business insider“Roles are a fun and creative way for people to express themselves and be entertained. We are excited to make this new version more accessible to our global community. No other plans to release on start date or in countries at this time. "
Reels had a relatively slow rollout worldwide after it first launched in Brazil last year as a test for iOS and Android. Last month, TechCrunch reported that the feature had expanded to France and Germany. Facebook recently announced the shutdown of its standalone TikTok-style video app Lasso. Some speculate that this is the result of an upcoming launch for Reels.
Facebook has previously integrated similar features from competing apps into its own services to better compete with them. In 2016, we reported that Instagram's Stories feature, for example, was an “almost perfect copy” of Snapchat. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, noted that TikTok was comparable to Instagram's Explore tab last year, suggesting that part of the company's attempts to compete with its Chinese rival may be taking place here.
