We may soon reach the Peak Mini Retro Console. After the excellent Genesis / Mega Drive Mini and the confusing Game Gear Micro, Sega has introduced an even more unlikely product: get to know the Astro City Mini.
For those who are not familiar with the original Astro City, it was not a platform in itself, but a special seating arcade cabinet in which the operators could buy and install a wide variety of game boards. Sega developed a whole range of "City" cabinets, with Astro City from 1993 proving to be omnipresent and iconic by far. They are still a very common sight in Japanese arcades.
For this reason, the Astro City Mini comes preinstalled with a number of Sega arcade games. There will be a total of 36, and here are the titles confirmed so far: over Game Watch::
- Alien syndrome
- Alien Storm
- Golden ax
- Golden Ax: Revenge of Death Adder
- Columns II
- Dark edge
- Puzzle & Action: Tant-R
- Virtua Fighter
- Fantasy zone
- Modified beast
The Astro City Mini looks like a scaled-down arcade cabinet, similar to the Neo Geo Mini. Contrary to this system, however, Sega says that the stick uses suitable microswitches, so the use should be much more satisfactory. There is an HDMI output on the back as well as two USB-A ports, a micro-USB port and a headphone jack. Unfortunately, there is no word on whether a battery will be installed.
The Astro City Mini is slated to launch in Japan later this year and will cost 12,800 yen (approximately $ 120).
